Chief prosecutor vows no forgiveness for July genocide perpetrators

Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal, Mohammad Tajul Islam, has declared that no one involved in the July genocide will be spared.

Speaking at a press briefing at the tribunal premises on Monday, he sent a clear message to those who believed they could evade justice by committing genocide or disrupting the judicial process through counter-revolutionary acts.

Tajul Islam presented the opening statement in the war crimes case concerning the killing of six individuals, including student Anas, during the July-August protests at Chankharpul in Dhaka.

He emphasized the state‍‍`s commitment to justice for over 1,500 victims, relying on the testimonies of survivors and families of those who sacrificed their lives to liberate Bangladesh for the second time.

The first witness in the case was Shahriar Khan Palash, father of martyr Anas, accompanied by his mother.

On July 14, the tribunal framed charges against eight accused, including four absconding suspects. Currently, four individuals—former Shahbagh police OC (Operations) Md. Arshad Hossain, constable Md. Sujan Mia, Md. Imaz Hossain Emon, and Md. Nasirul Islam—are in custody.

The tribunal‍‍`s second day of hearing on July 3 concluded the charge framing stage. Some accused, including former high-ranking Dhaka Metropolitan Police officials, failed to appear despite public notices.

The case stems from the police firing on peaceful student protesters in Chankharpul on August 5, 2024, which resulted in multiple deaths, including Shahriar Khan Anas and others.
